Why work at the PBO?

We have a small, dedicated workforce of around 45 employees, which becomes temporarily larger during an election year. Our workforce includes ongoing employees, secondees from other Commonwealth agencies and external agencies, and graduates under the Parliament of Australia Graduate Program.

All our technical employees are allocated to the preparation of costings and budget analysis, and self-initiated longer-term projects and publications. A small team of employees are dedicated to managing our governance, engagement and corporate support functions, including oversight of our outsourced payroll, financial transactions, and ICT services. Our technical and corporate staff collaborate to deliver on our key priorities.

Working at the PBO

The PBO has an 'if not, why not' approach to flexible work, with all staff able to work flexibly, including access to regular home-based work. Internal and external opportunities for learning and development are promoted, including access to studies assistance to undertake training which directly relates to the PBO's functions and helps staff reach their career development goals.

The PBO is a recognised employer partner with CPA Australia. This recognises that the PBO demonstrates a strong commitment to learning and development and supports the professional development of its accounting and finance employees. If you would like to understand more about what this means for you, please refer to the Recognised Employer Program information on CPA Australia's website.

The PBO offers attractive salaries and employer superannuation as well as a range of other benefits, including salary packaging. PBO staff are engaged under common law agreements [PDF 1.92 MB] that outline the employment conditions for non-SES employees.

We are located within Australian Parliament House. Staff have access to a wide variety of amenities including cafes, on-site childcare, recreational and gym facilities, a post office and bank, and free parking.

Parliament of Australia Graduate program

The PBO offers 3 to 6 month placements to graduates who have been accepted into existing Australian Government department and agency graduate programs. The program is designed to give graduates exposure to the PBO's work in supporting the Parliament. The skills and knowledge graduates obtain through the program may assist in building the foundations for career progression and professional development.
